Hi there. I am so glad that you are here! If you are interested, I’ll tell you a little about myself…
I consider my three most important roles in life to be: wife, mom, and educator. My husband, Mr. Wizard (he chose this name), is an extraordinarily devoted dad and medical researcher who in his free time is trying to find better medical treatments for cancer. I am a mom of four boys (that’s right four!). B.B.B. (for big, big brother) is sixteen (going on seventeen); Big A is five years old; and Little Z and Little B are one year old twins. I am also a literacy educator and EXTREME lover of books (I love all books, but picture books are my true love)!
I have taught preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and both undergraduate and graduate level university students. I have also worked with children all through elementary school as a reading specialist. My graduate work focused on early literacy instruction and children’s literature instruction. As an educator I am devoted to helping children to become readers, and engaged life long learners. I am also passionate about working towards the day when ALL children have access to an excellent public education.
I’ve learned, the hard way, along my journey as an educator that many public school classrooms are not able to provide excellent educational experiences all the time to all children. I also feel that current policies in early childhood education are hurting all children, but especially boys (more on this to come). Big A is about ready to start kindergarten, and my husband and I, for many reasons, made the BIG decision that the best place for him to go to school might be at home with me. Click here to read more about why my family has chosen homeschooling. B.B.B. will be a senior in high school this coming year, and he will continue, by his choice, to attend public school (at a first rate high school by many standards). The Littles will be along for the ride.
I have pretty lofty goals for my boys! I want them to become moral, empathetic, loving people, and productive, happy and engaged citizens of the world (fingers crossed). Oh, and I also want them to love to learn. Whew, it makes me worried if I am up to this, and it makes my brain buzz just thinking about how I will do it. I really hope that I can be the teacher to my little boys that I want to be. On this site, I hope to think through how homeschooling will work for us, share what I’m doing and what I’ve learned, and solicit advice from anyone who has good advice to give. I am hopeful that you will find at least some of what is here useful or interesting, and I’m hopeful you will help me out when you can.
Oh, and I really love coffee (especially when it is mixed with chocolate)! I have four/five boys. Can you blame me?
Glad you are here!
